Hiep hiep hoera, de modeafdeling van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen bestaat vijftig jaar en viert dat met een overzichtstentoonstelling in het Modemuseum.
Het Modemuseum of MoMu zit in een van de betere winkelstraten van Antwerpen. Het heeft een oude façade, maar een zeer modern interieur. Eenmaal binnen is gelijk duidelijk welke tentoonstelling hier te zien is. Het begint namelijk al op de trap. Via een tijdlijn loop je langs de jaren van de modeafdeling van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten. Het is wat veel om gelijk allemaal op te nemen, maar het laat in één oogopslag de rijke geschiedenis van deze opleiding zien. Minpunt: er worden in de tijdlijn films afgespeeld over de academie. Die zijn niet te verstaan als het druk is en je kunt er ook niet rustig voor gaan zitten.

Hip hip hooray, the fashion department of the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp exists fifty years and celebrates this with a retrospective in the Modemuseum.
The Modemuseum or MoMu is situated in one of the better shopping streets of Antwerp. It has an old facade but a very modern interior. Once you're inside it's quite clear which exposition is on display. The retrospective starts directly on the stairs. Through a timeline you walk along all the years of the fashion academy. It is a bit much to take in at once, but it shows the rich history in one glance. Disadvantage: in the timeline movies about the academy are shown. But it is not possible to hear them when it is busy and there aren't any chairs, so you can't sit down for a moment and look at them attentively. 

De tentoonstelling is opgebouwd in twee delen. Het afstudeerwerk en de signaturen. Het afstudeerwerk is opgedeeld in verschillende thema's. Arcadia, Nirvana, Desire en Harmony/Protest. Deze thema's zijn de rode draad door het afstudeerwerk van de studenten. Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik die thema's niet gelijk begrijp, maar ik begrijp al langer niet waarom kleding een concept moet hebben. Bijvoorbeeld Arcadia; het paradijselijke land van onschuld. Waarom zou je dat in kleding vertalen? Toch opent het de ogen. Het ontwerp van Tabitha Osler laat de ongerepte natuur van Arcadia zien. 

The retrospective is divided into two parts. The work of the graduates and the signatures. The work of the graduates has different themes. Arcadia, Nirvana, Desire and Harmony/Protest. I should be honest, I didn't comprehend the themes at once. But I don't understand why clothing should have a theme. For example Arcadia: the paradise of innocence. Why would you translate that in to fashion? On the other hand it opened my eyes. The design of Tabitha Osler shows the virgin nature of Arcadia.

De bekendste ontwerpers die van de modeacademie zijn gekomen zijn de  Antwerpen Zes: Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Walter van Beirendonck, Marina Yee, Dirk van Saene en Dirk Bikkembergs. + Martin Margiela.

Zij studeren af in de jaren 1980-1982. Als er niet uitgebreid stil zou zijn gestaan bij deze iconische ontwerpers, zou deze tentoonstelling een lachertje zijn. Maar gelukkig Happy birthday dear academie doet het wel. De Antwerpen Zes worden vereerd met een gang vol foto's die leidt naar een ovale ruimte vol ontwerpen van de Antwerpen Zes + Martin Margiela. Een van de hoogtepunten in deze zaal is een catsuit van Dirk van Saene. Ik moest twee keer kijken voordat ik doorhad dat het hele kledingstuk geschilderd was. Een trompe l'oeil. 

They graduated in the years 1980-1982. If this exposition wouldn't dwell on these iconic designers, the retrospective would have been a joke. But fortunately Happy birthday dear academie does. The Antwerp Six are honored with an alley full of pictures that lead into an oval room full of designs of the Antwerp Six + Martin Margiela. One of the highlights in this room is the catsuit made by Dirk van Saene. I had to look twice to see that the whole garment was painted. A trompe l'oeil.

De ontwerpen staan opgesteld op een podium, als een soort altaar. Daardoor zie je de achterste creaties niet van dichtbij. Jammer. Op deze manier zie je een kunststof jas met opblaasbare delen die spierballen moeten voorstellen van Walter van Beirendonck niet goed. Terwijl zo'n stuk er toch om vraagt goed bestudeerd te worden. Überhaupt vragen de ontwerpen van deze Zes erom goed bekeken te worden. Je wilt weten waarom Dirk Bikkembergs en consorten zo goed zijn. Dan is het extra jammer dat ook de achterkant niet te zien is. En dat terwijl een jurk van Minju Kim (winnaar van de H&M Design Award 2013) gewoon aan te raken is, niet dat ik dat gedaan heb, overigens.

The designs are placed on a stage, like a shrine. In that way it is impossible to see the creations in the back up close. That's a shame. You can't see the plastic jacket with inflatable muscles of Walter van Beirendonck. While this piece asks for a better inspection. Anyway, you would like to see the designs of the Antwerp Six very good because you want to know why they are so good. It is a pity that is not possible to see the back. Strangely enough you can touch a dress of Minju Kim (winner of the H&M Design Award 2013) not that I did that, of course.





Ook jammer, dat een van de topstukken: de opblaasjurk van Manon Kündig een beetje is weggemoffeld aan het einde van de tentoonstelling. Aan de andere kant zorgt het ook voor een leuke verrassing. Waar komt het geluid van ontsnappende lucht vandaan?  
Het lijkt alsof er niet goed is nagedacht over de opstelling van sommige stukken. 

Also a shame; one of the highlights: the blow-up-dress of Manon Kündig is a bit smuggled away at the end of the exposition. However like this the dress comes as a nice surprise. Where does that sound of escaping air come from? It seems that there hasn't been enough thought about the arrangement of the designs.

Happy birthday dear academie laat goed zien welk talent de afgelopen vijftig jaar zijn/haar opleiding heeft genoten aan de academie. Het laat ook zien dat mode kunst is. Toen directeur Mark Macken in de jaren zestig bedacht dat er een modeafdeling moest komen op de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten was daar kritiek op. Mode zou niet binnen een traditionele kunstacademie passen. Met deze, toch wel kleine expositie, wordt in één klap bewezen dat de modeacademie er thuishoort en er niet is weg te slaan.  

Happy birthday dear academie shows which talent came from the academy the past fifty years. It also shows that fashion is art. When director Mark Macken decided in the sixties that there should be a fashion department at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten there was criticism. A traditional art academy wasn't the place for fashion. But this, however small retrospective, proves that fashion belongs at the academy en isn't going anywhere.

Al met al is Happy birthday dear academie de reis naar Antwerpen waard. De opstelling is misschien wat verwarrend en onbevredigend. Zo is bij de films in de tijdlijn en de rangschikking van de ontwerpen van de Zes de vorm belangrijker dan de inhoud. Terwijl het daar toch om gaat in een tentoonstelling. Aan de andere kant is het mooi om te zien dat bijna iedere modeontwerper, hoe groot nu ook, ooit is begonnen als student. Dat er hoop is voor iedere creatieve geest. Dat er al heel veel gemaakt en verzonnen is, maar dat de tijd steeds voor nieuwe invalshoeken en stromingen zorgt. Het is een bonte verzameling tentoongestelde ontwerpen. Je valt van het ene jaar in het andere. Van het ene idee in het andere concept. 

All in all Happy birthday dear academie is worth the trip to Antwerp. The arrangement might be confusing and unsatisfactory. For example at the movies in the timeline and the exposition of the designs of the Six the form is more important than the content. Strange, because content is essential in a retrospective. On the other hand it's nice to see that almost every fashion designer started as a student. That there is hope for every creative soul. That already there has been made a lot and a lot has been created, but the time we live in provides new angles and currents. The retrospective is a motley collection of designs. You step from one year in the other. From one idea in the other concept.

En wat het poosje rijden naar de Belgische stad nog meer waard maakt is het feit dat de tentoonstelling niet stopt als je het museum uit loopt. In dezelfde straat zit de winkel van Dries van Noten. In een paar stappen bestrijk je meer dan dertig jaar; van opleiding naar eigen label en winkel. Mooier kan het bijna niet. En daar stopt het nog niet. Op verschillende plekken in de stad staan containers op elkaar gestapeld met daarop gigantische foto's van ontwerpen van bijvoorbeeld Walter van Beirendonck. Antwerpen staat in het teken van de modeacademie en viert de verjaardag groots mee. Dear academie, nog vele jaren. 

En the fact that the retrospective doesn't end when you get out of the museum makes the effort even more worth it. In the same street the shop of Dries van Noten is situated. In a few steps you cover more than thirty years; from his education to his own label and shop. It couldn't be better. And that is not where the celebration ends. On different locations in the city are containers piled up with gigantic pictures of the designs by for example Walter van Beirendonck. Antwerp is dominated by the fashion academy and celebrates it's birthday. Dear academie, congratulations.
