Als Rotterdammer hoor ik een hekel te hebben aan Amsterdam. Sterker nog de naam van de hoofdstad mag ik niet uitspreken; je zegt 020. Ik mag er eigenlijk nooit heen en alles wat er vandaan komt, hoor ik bijvoorbaat helemaal niks te vinden. Nu ben ik geen rasechte Rotterdammer (wel met hart en ziel, maar dat daargelaten) en ik heb nooit een hekel gehad aan Amsterdam. Ik heb er zelfs even gewoond, ik ga er graag heen om te winkelen en er zijn goede musea. En toch, waar de Rotterdammer een beetje te veel 'niet lullen, maar poetsen' heeft, heeft de Amsterdammer een beetje te veel 'poeha om niks'. Zo is het ook met de tentoonstelling Fong Leng - Fashion & Art. De bladen en kranten stonden vol over de 'grande dame' van de Nederlandse mode. De tentoonstelling werd een eerbetoon genoemd. Nou, dat moest wat zijn. Op een druilerige vrijdag toog ik naar de hoofdstad om in het Amsterdam Museum welgeteld twee zaaltjes met ontwerpen te vinden. U leest het goed: twee zaaltjes.

As a Rotterdammer I'm supposed to abominate Amsterdam. I should not say the name of the capital; you're supposed to say 020 (the area code). I should never go there and everything that starts there I'm supposed to think is stupid. I am not a born but raised Rotterdammer and I've never hated Amsterdam. I even lived there once, I like to go there to shop and there are good museums. And yet where the Rotterdammer has too much a don't talk, just work attitude, the Amsterdammer makes too much fuss about nothing. And that is how it is with the exposition Fong Leng - Fashion & Art. The magazines and newspapers wrote that it is a homage. Pages were filled about the 'grande dame' of the Dutch fashion world. That has to be something. So, on a drizzling friday I went to the capital to find in the Amsterdam Museum two rooms with designs. Yes, there is nothing wrong with your eyes: two rooms.

Laat ik duidelijk zijn: Ik wil het werk van Fong Leng en de invloed die zij heeft gehad op de Nederlandse mode geen 'poeha om niks' noemen, maar de tentoonstelling wel. De invloed van de Chinees-Nederlandse ontwerper komt op deze manier niet over. Haar creaties worden niet in een perspectief of tijdsbeeld geplaatst. Zwarte muren, grind op de vloer en daarin het werk van Fong Leng, een video geprojecteerd op de muur met wat foto's, een uitleg over het leven van de ontwerper en dat was het. Toen ik de tweede zaal uitliep was ik verbaasd: Huh?! Was dit het? Het mooie is wel dat de tentoonstelling wordt omlijst door drie nummers. Ik kwam binnen bij Isn't she lovely van Stevie Wonder en daar ging ik ook weer mee naar buiten. Dat noem ik goede timing.

Let me be perfectly clear: I'm not saying the work of Fong Leng and the influence she had on Dutch fashion is too much fuss about nothing but the exposition is. The influence of the Chinese-Dutch designer isn't made clear. The creations are not put in perspective or in an era. Black walls, gravel on the floor and the work of Fong Leng in it, a video projected on a wall with some pictures, an explanation on the wall about the life of the designer and that was it. When I walked out of the second room I thought: Huh?! This was it? The nice thing is that the exposition comes with a soundtrack of three songs. I walked in with Isn't she lovely by Stevie Wonder and I also walked out with it. That's what I call good timing.

Het wordt mij ook niet duidelijk waarom juist deze in Rotterdam geboren ontwerper in het Amsterdam Museum te zien moet zijn. Hoe belangrijk was zij dan voor de stad? Laat foto's zien van Amsterdam met daarin Fong Leng, haar studio en natuurlijk Mathilde Willink; de vrouw die een bijzondere verschijning was in de hoofdstad dankzij de creaties van Fong Leng. Laat dat zien!  

It also doesn't become clear why this born in Rotterdam designer belongs in the Amsterdam Museum. Why was she important for the city? Why not show pictures of Amsterdam with Fong Leng in it, her studio and of course Mathilde Willink; the woman who was an extraordinary appearance thanks to the creations of Fong Leng. Show it!

Echt, het werk van Fong Leng is prachtig. Het zit fantastisch in elkaar en het heeft haar handtekening. Niemand anders zou dit gemaakt kunnen hebben.  Zij is de enige in haar soort. Ze is uniek en dat vraagt om een unieke expositie. Niet dit dertien in een dozijn debacle. "Ik mis de mode niet. Ik vind de modewereld van nu maar saai," zei Fong Leng in de Volkskrant. Als dat zo is, dan vraag ik me af wat de vrouw die een modeshow gaf in het voetbalstadion in Eindhoven voor 20.000 mensen, als ze heel eerlijk is, nou echt van deze tentoonstelling vindt.

Really, the work of Fong Leng is beautiful. It's fantastically made and it has her signature. Nobody else could have made these cloaks and gowns. She is one of a kind. She is unique and that asks for an unique exhibition. Not this dime a dozen fiasco. "I don't miss fashion. I find todays fashion world quite boring," said Fong Leng in the newspaper Volkskrant. If that's the case, I wonder what the woman who gave a fashion show in a football stadium in Eindhoven in front of 20.000 people, really thinks about this exposition.
